BIRGUNJ, Aug 12: The import of tobacco via Birgunj border has increased by 68 percent in Fiscal Year 2016/17, in comparison with the previous fiscal year. According to the Birgunj Custom Office, 7, 803 tons of tobacco entered via Birgunj border in FY2016/17 while only 1,128 tons had entered in FY2015/16.

“Cigarette producers like Surya Nepal and other small industries of tobacco products have been importing raw materials for tobacco,” Sewantak Pokharel, chief custom officer of Birgunj Custom Office said: “As the rate of excise duty is high on tobacco, the custom office collects good revenue from tobacco.”

According to him, from the import of tobacco worth Rs 2.82 billion, the custom office receives Rs 1.49 billion in revenue including custom duty, excise duty and VAT.

The comparative increase in tobacco import is due to smooth trade between India and Nepal this year. The Birgunj custom point was closed for 134 days due to Madhes protests last year.
