CHITWAN, August 12: The Narayangadh-Mugling road section has been blocked by landslides at multiple points. Incessant rainfall throughout the day has increased the risk of landslides in other areas as well, the District Police Office, Chitwan said.

It may be noted that the authority concerned here decided to halt the vehicular movement along the route since 2 pm Saturday due to fear of occurrence of landslide(s) and the mudslide at Setidhobhan of Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality-6 was reported after a while, DPO Police Chief Deepak Thapa said.

Likewise, the starting point of the highway to Muglin side has been hit by a landslide, according to Narayangadh-Mugling Road Project engineer Shiva Khanal.

Areas like Bhaludhunga and Bhorle continue to see uninterrupted mudslide. However, no major landslide has been reported yet along the route.

He said the authorities concerned are waiting the continuous mudslips to stop so that they could start the clearance works. Further details about the effects of disasters are awaited. The project has put required equipments and human resources on standby to clear off the landslides once the situation becomes normal.

Vehicular movement on East-West highway blocked at Daunne

Meanwhile, vehicular movement in Daunne along the East-West Highway in Nawalparasai has been disrupted since last night due to continuous landslides.

According to Nawalparasi Chief District Officer Uday Bahadur Rana, some portion (around seven kilometers) of the highway at Daunne caved-in, disrupting the traffic since 10:00 pm last night.

Efforts are on to repair the damaged section, he said. Some 10 small landslides have occurred at and around Daunne. Continuous fall of mudslides in such areas has made the clearance efforts more challenging.

With blockage of the road, a large number of passengers have left stranded midway. There is a queue of vehicles up to some 10 kilometers. Passengers are going through really terrible experiences due to traffic jam for more than 18 hours.

Traders at Dumkibas, Arunkhola, Chormara, Bardaghat and Chisapani areas have been allegedly overcharging passengers in the supply of foodstuffs. Passengers have complained that they are forced to pay Rs 100 for a packet of noodle (boiled) and Rs 300 per kilogramme of apples, accusing highway traders of taking advantages from their adversity.
