Medical equipments gather dust due to lack of experts

JUMLA, Nov 13: Due to lack of radiologists, ultrasound installed in Jumla Hospital five years ago has come of no use. “This has hit the patients hard,” Sarita Rawal, a nurse at the hospital said.

According to Chief of District Health Office Brish Bahadur Shahi, an MBBS graduate has to undertake a special course to be trained as a radiologist. However, most of the doctors posted at the Jumla hospital are only MBBS graduates.[break]

The equipment comes to use only when some non-governmental organizations run health camps in the district. “Radiologists are invited for such health camps. At other times, the equipment remains unused,” Shahi said.

Likewise, the operation theatre at the hospital also remains unused due to lack of health experts. The theatre was constructed at the cost of eight million rupees in 2058 BS. As a result patients visit hospitals in Nepalgunj or Surkhet to undergo even minor surgeries.

Like the ultrasound installed at the hospital, the operation theatre also comes to use only when NGOs run health camps. “The operation theatre has adequate equipments and has better facilities than at Bir Hospital. However, we´ve not been able bring it to use,” Shahi said.
