15 killed in natural disasters in a week, seven missing

KATHMANDU, July 6: Home Minister Janardan Sharma informed parliament on Wednesday that natural disasters such as landslide, flood and lightening claimed as many as 15 lives across the country in the last one week. 

Addressing the House meeting, Sharma also said that seven persons have been missing and five were injured in such calamities. "The government has left no stone unturned for rescue, relief and risk reduction of natural disasters," said Sharma. 

The government has mobilized the local administrations and all three security agencies for rescue and relief tasks keeping in view the heavy monsoon, Sharma said. 

Informing the House about the reason of inundation in Tilathi area of Saptari district, the home minister said the failure to repair the dam on the Tharo Khola in the district was a major reason behind the floods. Sharma said that the existing dam has been damaged at five various locations and that a high-level delegation has been sent to the district to study the damage and recommend measure to repair the dam.   

The minister said that the government has been collecting information and coordinating rescue and relief tasks in coordination with the National Emergency Operation Center at the ministry. “Necessary manpower for rescue and relief in natural disasters will be deployed immediately after receiving the information,” he said. 

Five emergency operation centers and 49 district emergency operation centers have been actively working on disaster related information collection, said Sharma. 

Minister Sharma said that the government has been planning disaster management authorities in all seven provinces in the new federal structure. The government has been drafting a new disaster management bill, said Sharma.
