Guru Purnima being observed today

KATHMANDU, July 19: People, especially students are observing Guru Purnima (Teacher's Day) across the country today. 
Guru is respected as he/she helps dispel the darkness. 

It falls on the full moon day of Ashadh month according to Nepali calendar. People pay respect and show gratitude to their Gurus or teachers for imparting education and teachings on the same day. They also offer prayers for, garlands and delicacies to Gurus or teachers and receive blessings from them in return. 

The day is celebrated to express gratitude towards Gurus or teachers, said theologist and chairman of the Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti, Nepal Prof Dr Ram Chandra Gautam. 

The day is also celebrated in memory of Vedavyas, the author of 18 Purans and 18 Upapurans in Sanskrit. 

As per Hindu values, senior people in terms of knowledge, strength and experience and father, mother, maternal uncle, father-in-law, mother-in-law, great grandfather and great grandmother are also respected as teachers. People and students are celebrating the festival with various organisations across the country. 

On the other hand, people have taken to the modern form of communication technology, social networking site like Facebook, Twitter and Whats App to pay homage to their Gurus or teachers. RSS
