“I encourage the parties to view this period as 100 days of opportunity to demonstrate to the Nepali public and International Community their obligation to fulfill their commitments spelled out in the 13 September agreement,” Pascoe told journalists at a 16-minute long press conference before wrapping up his two-day visit to Kathmandu.[break]
Pascoe visited Kathmandu on behalf of the Secretary-General to assess implementation of the September 13 agreement that, among other things, pledged to complete the peace process basically by January 14. The visit also aimed at making preparations for a smooth transition to the post-UNMIN phase.
Encouraging the parties to agree to a clear work plan, Pascoe further told the press meet at the UNMIN Headquarters, “UNMIN needs to have an early and clear understanding with the parties on the way forward as it moves to withdraw.”
During his two-day stay in Kathmandu, Pascoe had held meetings with the prime minister, constituent assembly chairman, top leaders of major parties, and members of the Special Committee.
“We also urge the parties to redouble their efforts to complete the constitution-making process and adopt the new constitution by May 2011,” he further added.
Pascoe returned New York Thursday evening.
