Shrestha, Khaling reach last eight

KATHMANDU, Sept 29: Five-time national champion Puja Shrestha and Samjhana Khaling of Armed Police Force (APF) advanced into the quarterfinals of women’s singles during the Second Nepal Police National Badminton Championship on Wednesday.



Shrestha defeated Anita Tamang (Dhading) 21-8, 21-7 while Khaling ousted Renu Memba (Dhading) 21-5, 21-7.[break]



Likewise, Jalmaya Gurung (Nepal Police Club), Sabina Panthi (APF), Poonam Gurung (Kaski), Merry Thapa (Banke), and Nangsala Devi Tamang and Mina Shrestha of APF also booked quarterfinal berths.



NPC’s Gurung got a walkover from top seeded Saradevi Tamang of Nepal Army while Panthi thrashed Manila Shrestha (Kathmandu) 21-8, 21-12. Poonam Gurung edged out Samjhana Sharma 21-14, 21-11, Thapa defeated Anita Ghimire (Kathmandu) 21-12, 21-10, Nangsala beat Sabita Paneru (Kanchanpur) 21-13, 21-11, and Shrestha defeated Saraswati Shrestha 21-14, 21-14.



Shreeya Pradhan (Bhojpur), Shiksha Shrestha (Chitwan), Saraswati Budhathoki (Kaski) and Manila Shrestha (Kathmandu) listed their names for the semifinals of U-17 girls´ singles.



Puja Shrestha/Nangsala Devi Tamang (APF), Merry Thapa/Samjhana Sharma (Banke), Jenisha Kaucha (Baglung)/Mina Shrestha (APF) and Sabina Panthi/Samjhana Khaling (APF) entered the women’s doubles semifinals beating Jalmaya Gurung/Ratna Limbu 21-10, 21-14, Anita Ghimire/Maheshwari Dangol 21-10, 21-10, Poonam Gurung/Swastika Budhathoki 21-17, 21-13 and Elina Rai/Enika Rai 21-9, 21-7, respectively.



Dipesh Dhami (APF), Santosh Khadga (Ideal), Suman Limbu (APF), Sudip Sedhai (Police School), Ayush Bikram Shah (Kathmandu), Irfan Ansari (APF), Bilal Warsi (Banke) and Anil Malla (Police School) secured berths for the quarterfinals of U-17 boys’ singles.



Nepal’s top seeded Bikash Shrestha of Nepal Police and second seeded Ratnajit Tamang (APF) advanced into the second round of men’s singles thrashing Rajendra Adhikari 21-3, 21-3 and Rajendra Khadga 21-7, 21-14 in straight sets, respectively.



Likewise, Sahadev Khadga (Nepal Army), Ram Mani Mishra (Dhading), Dipesh Dhami and Indra Mahata (APF), Damodar Khadga (Nepal Army), Deepak Bohara (Nepal Police), Sudip Sedhai (Nepal Police School), Sudip Budhathoki, Rajan Shiwakoti (APF), Anil Malla (Police School), Abhishek Bose (Hetauda), Pankaj Chand (APF), Surya Shrestha (Nepal Police), Bishnu Katuwal, Surya Bahadur Thapa, Bibek Shrestha and Bishal Pradhan (APF) also made it to the second round.
