KATHMANDU, June 19: Meeting of the Constitutional Council (CC) on Monday failed to recommend chief justice at the Supreme Court.

According to a source, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba proposed the name of the most senior justice Gopal Parajuli for the position of chief justice but main opposition leader KP Sharma Oli asked for some time to study about Parajuli arguing that he has noticed many controversies against the justice.

Parajuli, who is courting controversy regarding his date of birth recorded in the Judicial Council, is currently serving as the acting chief justice as Sushila Karki retired from the post on June 6. Earlier, the Judicial Council had sent a roaster of six justices eligible for the position.

Following the reservation of the opposition leader, the CC meeting could not recommend any name for the position.

"As ruling and opposition parties stood at odd, the CC could not recommend chief justice from today's meeting," wrote Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar's press advisor Babin Sharma (Basudev) on his twitter. Speaker is a member of the CC.

As per the constitution, the CC has to recommend a name from the roaster provided by the Judicial Council for the parliamentary hearing and if the name is endorsed from the hearing, the president appoints the chief justice.
