KATHMANDU, June 6: Chyasal Youth Club (CYC) has reached the quarterfinals of the ongoing Lalit Memorial U-18 Football Championship on Tuesday.

CYC registered a hard-fought 2-1 win over Saraswati Youth Club (SYC) in its last match in group A to extend its points tally to seven from three matches which was enough for it to become the group winner.

Second-placed Armed Police Force (APF) also secured its quarterfinals berth from the same group accumulating six points from three matches.

Now in the last eight clashes, CYC will face group B runner-up Friends' Club while APF will compete with departmental rival Tribhuvan Army Club, which advanced to the quarterfinals as group B winner.

In the match played at ANFA Complex, Krishna Bolan and Sushan Shrestha netted one goal each for the winning side CYC while Om Prakash Singh replied for SYC. CYC came into the match requiring at least a draw to secure a quarterfinals berth while SYC needed full three points to keep its hope for the last eight alive.

CYC took the lead in the match with Krishna finding the opener in the 21st minute.

Sushan extended CYC's lead by 2-0 in the 44th minute. Om Prakash pulled one back for SYC just one minute before the normal time.

Despite the victory, Chyasal Coach Thamman Bhsual wasn't fully satisfied. “The team bagged all three points but our defensive performance is below par. The quarter-finals have more competitive teams and if we don't improve our defense, it will be very difficult for us,” said Coach Bhushal.

Meanwhile in the second match of the day, Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi and Far-western FC were settled for 1-1 draw. As both sides are already out of the quarterfinals race, they wanted to wrap up the competition with a win. Dhiraj Sunwar scored the opening goal for Manang in the 38th minute but Ram Dhakal scoring in his own net in the 60th minute saw the Far-west snatching a point.
