KATHMANDU, May 11: Notorious Indian gangster Bablu Dube, who was also involved in high-profile kidnapping cases in Nepal, was shot dead by gunmen on Bettiah court premises in West Champaran district in India on Thursday.

Three unidentified assailants who had been laying in wait, shot Dube dead on the stairs of the court building when he was coming down after trial in a case, Indian media quoted police officials as saying.
According to PTI, Dube died on the spot while the assailants fled on motorcycles. The gangster was brought to the court of first-class judicial magistrate Kumud Ranjan for trial in an extortion case.

Dube was accused in over 36 cases of murder, extortion and kidnapping for ransom.
In Nepal, Dube was linked to the high-profile kidnapping of Birgunj-based businessman Sushil Kedia. Nepal Police and Indian Police had jointly secured safe release of Kedia from Bihar.
Later, Nepal Police had arrested and handed him over to Indian authorities after he was found hiding in Sitapaila area in Kathmandu some four years ago.

Although there were many complaints against him even in Nepal, Bara Police had informally handed Dube over to Bihar Police after detaining him for a few days after the arrest in Kathmandu.
