KATHMANDU, May 5: With the current fiscal year about to end, the government has decided to provide additional equipment to hospitals across the country.

According to the officials at the Ministry of Health (MoH), the ministry has planned to provide additional support to different hospitals in the current fiscal year and has already delivered some equipment.

Twenty sets of hemodialysis machine, 100 sets of ECG-2 channel, 50 sets of ECG-12 channel, 50 sets of gynecological table, 25 sets of USG machine, 150 ENT sets, 10 sets of x-ray machine, five sets of automated blood culture machine and 15 sets of dental chair have been provided to different hospitals including hospitals of the central, regional, zonal and district levels, said Jeevan Bhandari, press advisor to Health Minister Gagan Thapa.

“We supplied the equipment as per the demands of the hospitals,” he said.

The ministry had decided to provide additional Rs 500 million for central hospitals, Rs 650 million for primary health centers, Rs 330 million for regional and zonal hospitals and Rs 180 million for district hospitals to purchase the medical equipment, according to the sources at the ministry.

It is reported that many government hospitals do not have sufficient number of equipment while many have been dumped after sustaining damages. In absence of proper maintenance and timely purchase of equipment in the government hospitals, many patients are deprived of state facilities and are forced pay exorbitant fees at private hospitals for treatment and lab tests.

According to the MoH, there are over 4,100 government-owned health institutions including 110 hospitals, 203 primary health centers and 3,789 health posts across the country.
