GORKHA, April 27: Poultry farmers in Gorkha district have proven that Nepalis can earn over twice the income working in our own country than those who go abroad for employment opportunities, especially in the Gulf and the Middle East countries.

Andheri Kumar Rana of Sajod Lagan Rural Municipality-7, who returned Nepal after working for four years in Qatar, has demonstrated just that. After returning to his birthplace, Rana has been involved in poultry farming since the past two years. He now earns over Rs 70,000 a month.

Prior to this, Rana used to earn just Rs 30,000 working at a hotel in Qatar with no living quarters provided.

"When people come and ask me about my experience working abroad, I tell them that income is not so good there. In fact, I tell them that we can earn more than that in Nepal," said Rana, adding that he would not have gone abroad for employment had he learnt about poultry farming earlier.

At present, Rana has about 15,000 chicken. He has also poultry farming methods to seven youths of the village and the occupation has spread in the village. The village currently produces a large quantity of chickens.

Two other villagers Resham Gurung and Harek Ram BK, who had gone to Qatar along with Rana have also started poultry farming tending about 2,000 chickens.

Lots of youths in the village are now attracted toward poultry farming. Twenty-four year old Sanjay Rana, a local, who was preparing to fly abroad for employment has cancelled his plan and has started a poultry farm with around 1000 chickens.

"While people are waiting to build home from the government's quake grants, I have already reconstructed my quake-ravaged house thanks to the income from poultry farming," he said.

Most unskilled youths prefer to go to the Gulf and the Middle East for employment as job creation is almost nil due to political instability in the country. On an average 1,500 youths leave the country for foreign employment daily.
