KATHMANDU, April 23: “13 Reasons Why” is popular Netflix series based on the 2007 novel written by Jay Asher. The series has gained popularity all over world, mostly for its story and the message it portrays.

This popular series takes its audience on a whirlwind journey to a teenager’s life and highlights the bitter truth everyone goes through during high school. Viewers can easily relate to the characters without feeling disconnected. The story unfolds as the episode progresses and the main character Clay Jensen listens to the tape he mysteriously receives one day, after his return from school. The tape consists of all the dark secrets that led Hannah, his classmate to death.

High school is a tough place; it can either break you or make you. All of us have made of fun of our classmate but sometimes fail to realize the consequences our joke might have on them. “13 Reasons Why” is a perfect TV series which will show its viewers the consequences of harsh words used as a joke. We can even relate it to someone who was bullied during school. In our country where only physical bullying is considered bullying, we fail to realize the scars left by emotional or verbal bullying is deeper than a cut.

The series teaches an important lesson and helps its viewers reflect their high school days and the mistakes they might have committed. The cast of the show which mainly consists of teenagers have done justice to their characters by reflecting just the right amount of emotions. The story also shows battle of parents who can’t seem to come to terms with the death of their only daughter.

Hannah has been broken many times but it when her cry for help is not heard that she gives up on her life. This also teaches us that we shouldn’t underestimate anyone’s pain. For most part, the show portrays what it means to be a school going teenager in today’s world. Of course, with the advancement of technology the world has become more luxurious but the technology has even given birth to devices which has made easier for us to hurt or humiliate others publicly.

The show is definitely not for someone who is going through a hard time. We must all know that the real life is different from reel life. People in real life don’t always feel guilty and don’t accept their mistakes easily. Giving up on life should never be an option and won’t heal the scars.

“13 Reasons Why” gives voice to peril of every young teenager. The show will certainly make its viewers careful about the choice of words and hopefully start a movement for people to be kinder and sympathetic.
