Nepal-China military training on counter-terrorism to begin from Sunday

KATHMANDU, April 14: Nepal and China have finalized the date to hold the first-ever joint military training between the armies of the two countries. The 10-day long Nepal-China Special Forces Joint Military Training named as Sagarmatha Friendship-2017 will begin in Kathmandu from April 16. 

Chief of the Directorate of Public Relations (DPR) of Nepal Army Brigradier General Jhankar Bahadur Kathayat said the joint military training is aimed at sharing experience and lessons learned by both the armies in the field of counter terrorism. 

“Terrorism has grown as a menace in the world. While Nepal Army will share its experience learnt in the course of fighting against terrorism, the Chinese army will also share its experience in tackling the issue of terrorism,” Kathayat told Republica.

Issuing a press statement on Thursday, Nepal Army (NA) said the joint training is being exercised in line with Nepal’s foreign and security policy to hold training, seminars, and military exercises on issues of common interests with the armies of various friendly countries.

The army stated that the joint military training is organized keeping in view the possible security threats that terrorism could cause in the future. Among other things, the joint military training on counter terrorism will deal with hostage scenario involving international terror groups and rescuing the hostages.

Although the NA has been holding joint military exercises with other countries including India and the United States, this is the first joint military training of the NA and the People’s Liberation Army of China. 

The NA has said that such bilateral and multilateral joint military training is expected not only to enhance military knowledge and professional capacity, but also to further strengthen military and diplomatic relations between the two countries.
