KATHMANDU, April 10:   Expressing dissatisfaction over its inability to enforce election code of conduct, the main opposition party, CPN-UML, has drawn attention of the Election Commission (EC) to stop breach of election of code of conduct on the part of the government.

A standing committee meeting of the party held at Dhumbarahi on Monday, the UML has claimed that the government was allocating budget, and transferring as well as promoting government employees against election code of conduct that has already come into force. 

According to a press statement issued by the party, the meeting has expressed serious concerned over such activities on the part of the government. Besides urging the government to stop such activities, the UML has also drawn attention of the EC to step up monitoring activities to stop them. 

The UML has also rejected the proposal of the ruling parties to hold local level election in two phases. While concluding that the proposal of the prime minister to hold the election two phases if the agitating Madhes-based parties join the election process, the UML has maintained that the election must be held  in single phase at any cost.
The meeting has also directed all party rank and file to step up preparations for the local level poll slated for May 14. While urging the government to ensure election within the stipulated date, the party has also urged the EC to expedite its preparations to make sure that the election is held on the day.

Regarding the issue of the constitution amendment to address the grievances of the agitating Madhes-based parties, the UML has maintained that its position on various contentious issues of the new constitution remains the same. The party has decided to hold meetings with other constituent parties of the opposition alliance to forge a common ground on various concurrent political issues. 

Although the ruling parties earlier registered a seven-point constitution amendment proposal to address the grievances of the agitating Madhes-based parties, the UML has remained opposed to any such amendment. The UML even announced to foil the proposed amendment, terming it 'anti-national'.
