Temporary police selected in 74 districts

KATHMANDU, April 7: Nepal Police has hired 74, 500 temporary police to be mobilized during the upcoming local level elections scheduled to take place on May 14. Police headquarters informed Friday that the new recruits, including 13, 300 women, would be deputed across the country after providing required training. 

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sarbendra Khanal, who is also the spokesperson of Nepal police, said that as many as 172, 000 candidates had filed applications. The new recruits were selected following physical test and written examination.  Nepal Police had invited application in all 75 districts of the country. However, the results of Jumla are yet to be published. 

 Temporary police will be active for 50 days from the date of hiring, including during their training period in the initial weeks. They will basically have non-combat role during the polls. Their duties range from guarding the polling stations and providing required assistance to regular police force and other security agencies.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), the lead ministry to maintain law and order during the polls, said that the temporary police will be primarily deployed in the areas where there are no potential security threats to the polls. Besides temporary police, the government plans to deploy 54,000 Nepal Police, 30,000 Armed Police Force, and 1,000 NID personnel. Nepal Army personnel will provide backup security in around 21,000 polling stations across the country. 

Officials at the Nepal Police headquarters said that the temporary police personnel will be entitled to the same perks and benefits enjoyed by constables of Nepal Police.
