"We have been selling almost all the essential commodities at the same price over the period. The claims that prices of commodities shot up during the strike period hold no ground," says a retailer at Ganesh Store, Maitidevi. He also said they were facing difficulty in getting fresh supplies.
Raju Shrestha, a retailer at Ason market, said most of the retailers are selling old stock as they have not been able to receive fresh supplies from India. "The price has remained almost stable because traders are selling from their old stock," he added.
Pabitra Bajracharya, president of Nepal Retailers´ Association, said retailers had not received fresh supplies from wholesalers as they had enough commodities in their stock. "Prices will go up once the retailers receive fresh supplies, as the wholesalers have already jacked up prices." He said the prices might rise after a week.
According to retailers, price of some of the essential commodities have remained unchanged over the period, while there have been slight changes in the price of a few commodities.
Prices of popular lentils such as Musuro, Mas, and Rahar have remained unchanged over the period. While Musuro lentil is selling for Rs 95 per kg, Mas lentil is priced Rs 110 to Rs 120 per kg. White pea is selling stable at Rs 45 per kg. However, the price of green pea has increased to Rs 55 per kg from Rs 42 over the period.
The price of Chana lentil has also increased by Rs 10 to Rs 15 and has been selling at Rs 70 to Rs 80 per kg.
Shrestha said the price of Rahar lentil, another popular lentil variety, has remained stable at Rs 140 per kg over the period. Price of Mung Khosta has also remained unchanged at Rs 150 to Rs 145 per kg.
The price of sugar has also remained stable at Rs 65 to Rs 70 per kg. Similarly, prices of popular edible oil have also remained unchanged over the period.
"Prices of popular mustard oil brands like Dhara and Family have remained unchanged. Dhara is selling for Rs 140 per liter," Shrestha said. Prices of sunflower and soybean oil have remained stable at Rs 100 to Rs 100 and Rs 90 per liter respectively.
