KATHMANDU, Jan 30: The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police on Monday arrested 17 foreign doctors and three hospital operators from various hospitals in the capital on the charge of working without permission.
Acting on a tip-off by the Nepal Medical Council (NMC), the illegitimate medical practitioners were arrested, according to CIB chief DIG Pushkar Karki. As per the existing laws of Nepal, foreign doctors have to mandatorily take permission from the NMC to work here.
Police arrested them after conducting raids in five different hospitals in Kathmandu. The three hospital operators were later released. The doctors arrested hail from China, the USA and Australia.
CIB officials said that they are planning to conduct raids in other hospitals based in the capital and beyond to ensure that those practising medicine have received due permission from the regulatory body of doctors in Nepal. CIB said it has lately focused its operation on issues concerning consumers rights and public interest.
