KATHMANDU, March 7: Kathmandu School of Law won the national round of the 58th Philip C. Jessup international Law Moot Court Competition held on March 3, organized by International Law Association Nepal (ILA Nepal).

This season’s competition focused on issues related to unilateral use of shared water resources, adverse impacts to a mixed heritage complex, repatriation of a historical artifact, and compensation for accepting refugees. The competition was judged by a panel of 10 lawyers.

The national rounds concluded with the oral rounds (pleadings) between the two teams of National Law College and Kathmandu School of Law and concluding remarks by former chief Justice Kedar Nath Upadhyay, President of ILA Nepal.

Jessup is the world’s largest moot court competition, with participants from over 550 law schools in more than 87 countries. The competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. One team is allowed to participate from every eligible school. Teams prepare oral and written pleadings arguing both the applicant and respondent positions of the case.

The winning team will proceed to represent Nepal at the international rounds of the Jessup competition to be held from April 9-15, 2017 in Washington D.C.
