KATHMANDU, Feb 27: Minister for Health Gagan Thapa has said that if the incumbent government led by Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal fails to hold local level elections by May 1, there will be no point in remaining in the government.

Speaking at an interaction organized by the Reporters Club Nepal on Monday, Thapa stated that the current government was formed to hold all the three tiers of elections by the stipulated time.

‘‘This government was formed to hold all the three tiers of elections by January 21 next year,'' he said.

''The Prime Minister himself said that if the elections could not be held by that time, there is no point in staying in the government. So, we will make every effort to make the elections announced by the government a 'success',’’ Thapa said.

Thapa argued that the government is not in a quandary to hold the local level elections by the stipulated date. He added, ‘‘the government is not in a dilemma to hold the elections by January 21, 2018.''

If the government fails to hold all the three tiers of elections, there will be no point in staying in the government anymore.

It won’t make any sense to extend the tenure of the government.’’ ‘‘We will try our best to endorse the constitution amendment proposal tabled in the Parliament by the government.''

''The election is the opportunity to prove ourselves and every party should go for elections even if the conclusions wouldn’t go our way,’’ Thapa added.

Minister Thapa said that the agitating Madhesi parties should take part in the constitution amendment process adding that the amendment process could be put to vote if it weren’t passed through the Parliament.
