The 2nd international Women’s Trade Expo, being held at the Army Officers’ Club in Kathmandu since Tuesday, was organized by the Federation of Women’s Entrepreneurs of Nepal (FWEAN) with the aim to encourage entrepreneurship among women and promote women entrepreneurs’ products in the local as well as global market. Hajuri Bista, the treasurer of FWEAN, talked to Republica about the expo and FWEAN’s upcoming plans. Excerpts:

How has the response from visitors been to the expo?

The number of visitors on the third day was quite impressive. If the numbers keep increasing at the rate seen in the first four days, we will certainly meet our expectation of 100,000 visitors by Saturday. The participation of international exhibitors at the expo has also been very satisfying. Their participation has helped promote the products of women entrepreneurs in international market.

How has the expo helped the women entrepreneurs of rural areas?

We have provided stalls for free to women entrepreneurs coming from different districts. FWEAN also bore the cost of their accommodation and food during their stay in Kathmandu. The expo helped bring women entrepreneurs and their products to Kathmandu. The fair has given a platform to women entrepreneurs to sell their products in Kathmandu.

How is FWEAN supporting women entrepreneurs?

FWEAN already has chapters in 34 districts. The organization has been supporting women entrepreneurs by providing financial and technical help through these chapters. We aim to expand our chapters to all over the country to help women entrepreneurs become independent.
