KATHMANDU, Sept 21: Expressing dissatisfaction with some of the provisions in the School Education Bill 2080 BS recently introduced by the government, government school teachers have continued with their Kathmandu-centric protest on Thursday as well.
At the call of the Nepal Teachers’ Federation, teachers from all over the country came to Kathmandu and gathered at Maitighar Mandala on Wednesday to stage demonstrations. They carried placards with slogans such as 'Stop abuse of school teachers', 'allocate 20 percent of the total budget for education'.
Meanwhile, today itself, there was a meeting between Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Education Science and Technology Minister Ashok Kumar Rai, the Education Secretary, representatives of the Nepal Teachers' Federation, and members of the Higher Secondary Teachers Union Nepal (HISTUN).
However, the meeting concluded without an agreement, as the government was unable to accede to the teachers' demands. The teachers had proposed that the government provide written assurances regarding their concerns and the amendment to relevant legislation. But, the federation indicated that the government was not willing to commit to this.
Following the lack of consensus in the talks, teachers initiated protests in Maitighar, Kathmandu.
