On the initiative of a local youth club, the record of bodies is maintained. The move aims at knowing the number of bodies brought for cremation yearly and informing the bodies concerned about the environmental effects that cremation causes, said Tulisi Neupane, a member of the club.[break]
The rampant use of tyres to burn up the bodies due to the lack of wood has spread pollution in and around Kankai area. "The stench that the burned bodies emanate makes the environment unlivable," Neupane said.
We had repeatedly pleaded the District Development Committee and the government to systematically manage cremation, but none of them heeded the pleas, he said. "This prompted us to manage cremation on our own initiative."
Neupane said the name of the deceased, address, age, cause of the death, family status etc will be kept in the record. The yearly record will be handed over to the Constituent Assembly members, he said.
According to the youth club, as many as 11 dead bodies are cremated on the west bank of Kankai daily.
