KATHMANDU, Jan 31: The concerned stakeholders have called on the political parties with belief entrenched in democracy to forward election as the agenda of the uprising.

At an interactive program on the theme: 'Local Democracy, Election and Good Governance' held on Monday by VDC Federation here, speakers warned of a trend of imposing rule over the people in place of good governance due to the failure to hold local body elections for a prolonged period of time.

They said the state's control mechanism has weakened due to overt politicization in development works coupled with the absence of people's representatives at the local level.

Federal Affairs and Local Development Ministry's Joint Secretary, Reshmi Raj Pandey, said the absence of people's representatives at the local bodies created a situation where the political parties seemed handicapped without legs and arms.

VDC Federation's erstwhile Chair, Krishna Prasad Sapkota, questioned if sovereign state meant representatives only or also the people. He said it was necessary to understand that federalism entailed not only province or state rather local levels as well.

Former President of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Taranath Dahal, noted that political parties' dons were imposing the rule in absence of local level elections and underlined extensive irregularities over the grants extended to the local levels.

VDC Federation's Chairman, Nawaraj Gelal, stressed on need for nationwide awareness for local level elections. RSS
