PM Agriculture Modernization Project

PANCHTHAR, Jan 31: Commercial farming of cardamom and ginger has been started in Panchthar district under Prime Minister Agriculture Modernization Project.
The project aims to modernize agricultural sector and make the country self-sufficient on agricultural products. The project, which began from the current fiscal year, has kept ginger and cardamom in priority.
Kamalesh Tiwari, senior agriculture development officer with District Agriculture Development Office (DADO), Panchthar, said that the project aims to modernize agriculture sector by utilizing local capital and human resources. There are four programs under the project and three of them will be implemented in the district, according to Tiwari.
Padam Prasad Adhikari, senior agriculture development officer with DADO Panchthar, said that the project aims to increase production, modernize agriculture sector, and create employment opportunity in the country.
The office will develop Ektin and Sidin village development committee (VDCs) as pocket area for cardamom production.
Under the program, the government will provide 50 percent grants to farmers to purchase farm equipment.
Local Development Officer of Panchthar Komal Prasad Dhamala said the project, if implemented properly, can play a vital role in development and modernization of agricultural sector in Nepal.
The government plans to implement the Prime Minister Agriculture Modernization Project in all 75 districts. Under the project, a super zone will be developed in each province, keeping seven crops on priority.
Tiwari said that the project, which will run for a decade, aims to generate 80,000 jobs. By implementing the project, the government aims to become self-sufficient in major crops in three years, vegetables and fish in two years and fruits in seven years. The government is investing Rs 100.44 billion in the project.
