KATHMANDU, Feb 14: Sangharsh, a collection of short stories, authored by Shova Gyawali, director of Nepal Republic Media (NRM), was launched amid a special event organized in the capital on Tuesday.

The book was launched jointly by former prime minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai, social workers Anuradha Koirala and Dr Mala Kharel, literary critic Dr Gyanu Pandey, litterateur Dr Nawaraj Lamsal and author Gyawali.

“These are stories of women’s struggles and their empowerment. The characters in the stories represent those in our society,” said Gyawali on the occasion, “I have tried to empower women through my stories.”

Gyawali said that the Nepali women are capable but we need to educate them which will lead to their social and economic empowerment. “Women need social and economic independence but that comes through education,” she said.

Also speaking on the occasion, Koirala of Maiti Nepal echoed Gyawali and said education is the first and foremost need to empower women.

Litterateur Lamsal said that Gyawali’s stories are focused on women empowerment and their struggles for equality.

Similarly, lierary critic Dr Pandey said that the stories in Gyawali’s book teach us to fight against social discrimination and inequality. “We need to end all kinds of social discrimination and inequalities. Author Gyawali has been able to communicate this message clearly to society through her book,” said Dr Pandey.

The chief guest of the book launch event, former prime minister Dr Bhattarai also addressed the event. “I read all the 26 stories in the book. To me, love is at the center of her realistic stories.”

Stressing on gender equality, he advised the Nepali women not to change their surname after marriage. “Don’t change your last name or add your husband’s last name to your name after you get married,” suggested Dr Bhattarai.

Shangharsh is Gyawali’s second book. Her first book, Sampurna Aakash, was launched a couple of years ago.
