KATHMANDU, Oct 15: The Election Commission (EC) has decided to write to the Press Council Nepal to conduct regular media monitoring as per Journalist Code of Conduct, 2073 BS; and Election Code of Conduct, 2079 BS during the election of House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly.
A meeting of the EC held on Friday stated that it is the Press Council's jurisdiction to monitor media. The election body urged the Press Council Nepal to conduct regular monitoring of the media in line with the constitutional provisions on freedom of expression, press freedom, right to information, and in line with international standards on mass communications for the election to the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly.
The EC, however, said it would conduct internal monitoring and write to the Press Council for action in case of anyone found spreading fake news, disinformation and hate speech as per its monitoring. EC expects cooperation from the Press Council on making elections free, fair, credible and peaceful.
