KATHMANDU, Jan 9: A study has showed that the country would demand 50,000 mega watt electricity by 2040. 

A study carried out by the Water and Energy Commission said the calculation of the electricity demand is based on the rise of electricity demand by 15 per cent every year. 
During a press conference organized at the Ministry of Energy on Monday, Minister for Energy Janardan Sharma said the country's demand of electricity is 1,721 megawatt this year. 

Sharing the information about the study, Minister Sharma further said by 2020, the demand for electricity in the country would rise to 6,814 mega watt. 

The study has made such projects based on 7.2 economic growth rate the country must achieve to be graduated to the status of a developing country from the least developed country. 

It has stressed on exploring other fronts for energy in addition to hydropower to prop up the national economy. 

The data brought forth by the Commission at a time when the country is short of authentic data on the demand of energy is expected to carry meaning. 

Meanwhile, the Independent Energy Producers' Association (IPAN), has demanded that the government implement the 19-point concept paper on elimination of energy crisis and electricity development decade. RSS
