KATHMANDU, March 6: The government has introduced new regulations making it mandatory for all online televisions including Youtube channels to receive operating license. The government has set Rs 500,000 as a fee to get license to operate online televisions.
In the 19th amendments made in the National Broadcast Regulations, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has made it mandatory for all those operating Youtube channels to receive operating license. The government has defined Youtube, OTP platforms and all audio and visual programs broadcast or transmitted through the internet as online televisions.
The government has set Rs 500,000 as license fee to get license to operate online television in an apparent bid to discourage the use of online televisions and Youtube channels to spread disinformation and fake news. The new provisions made in the National Broadcast Regulation also makes it mandatory to classify the programs broadcast through such platforms.
