KATHMANDU, Feb 8: CPN (Maoist Center) leader Dev Gurung has said that the alliance would end automatically if the Prime Minister took the MCC project forward without the consent of the alliance.
Leader Gurung said that the current ruling coalition was formed for the protection of the nation and the constitution, adding that the alliance should be maintained in the local elections as well. However, he clarified that the issue of forming an alliance in the local elections is yet to be discussed.
Gurung clarified that the MCC project would not be approved as it is. He expressed the view that the project should be taken forward only with national consensus and after amendment. He said that MCC should not be tabled in parliament until it is amended. He mentioned that the issue of MCC should be agreed upon as long as the current alliance exists. He added that the alliance would end automatically if the Prime Minister took the MCC project forward without the consent of the alliance.
Meanwhile, he said that there is a need to amend the local level election law while holding the local level election on May 13.
Leader Gurung said that the election should be held two months before the end of the tenure of the local level office-bearers and there might be legal complications even if the election is held on May 13. He expressed the view that the current law should be amended if possible and if an amendment to the law is not possible due to the obstruction in parliament, the election should be held within six months after the expiration of the term as per the provisions of the constitution. He stressed the need for holding the election in accordance with the provisions of the constitution as it is the main law to refer to in case of a conflict between any law and the constitution.
