KATHMANDU, Jan 10: The code of conduct for the National Assembly elections has come into force from Monday. Earlier, the Election Commission (EC) had stated that the election code of conduct would come into force from January 10 to maintain fairness, transparency and an environment without fear.

The EC has stated that the code of conduct has been implemented specifically for individuals, bodies concerned and officials. It has also urged all the concerned to follow the code of conduct. Stakeholders have been instructed to abide by the code of conduct as legal action will be taken against them if they violate it.

Meanwhile, the EC has published the final list of candidates and the election symbols have been provided to the office of the Election Officer of all seven provinces for the National Assembly election. There are 43 candidates in the National Assembly election for 19 posts to be held on January 26.

None of the registered candidates have withdrawn their candidacy. The parties in the five-party coalition government are contesting the by-elections for the National Assembly members. Similarly, the main opposition party CPN-UML has fielded its own candidate.

Candidates of Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Center), Janata Samajbadi Party, CPN (Unified Socialists) and Rastriya Janamorcha are contesting the election.

Elections are being held for a total of 19 posts representing the provinces, including women, dalits, persons with disabilities or minorities and others.  Of them, seven women, three dalits, two disabled and seven others will be elected.
