KATHMANDU, Dec 27: Sugarcane farmers are yet to receive Rs 126.40 million in outstanding dues from sugar mills.

According to the Sugarcane Farmers’ Struggling Committee, the sugar mills have not cleared the aforementioned amount out of Rs 650 million dues determined by the government. Apart from the government-fixed amount, the farmers have been claiming that there is a mismatch of an additional Rs 250 million, which they need to recover from the sugar producers.

Farmers said they are yet to receive Rs 50 million from Annapurna Sugar Mill, Rs 31.40 million from Shree Ram Sugar Mills, Rs 30 million from Mahalaxmi Sugar Mill, and Rs 15 million from Indira Sugar Mill, while Lumbini Sugar Mill also owes some amount to the farmers.

Rakesh Mishra, a member of the committee, said the government has turned apathetic to investigating the mismatch of amount despite expressing its commitment. “We will launch protest from mid-January if our past dues are not cleared within the next few weeks,” he said.
