KATHMANDU, Dec 26: As the term of office of local level elected officials is approaching an end, the Election Commission (EC) has proposed to the government to fix the poll date on April 27 to elect new leadership.

Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya and other officials met Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and informed them that the EC is ready to hold the local level elections within April 27, 2022.

The Election Commission has proposed to the government that it would be appropriate to fix the date on April 27, 2022 in a single phase. If it is not possible to hold the poll for any reasons, the first phase could be held on April 27 and the second phase on May 5, said Chief Election Commissioner Thapaliya.

Prime Minister Deuba had replied that the decision would be taken on the date proposed by the EC for the local elections after holding discussions with other political parties.

The EC has also informed the government that voting machines can be used in certain areas if the political parties agree.

As the five years of local level elections are approaching, the term of elected chiefs, deputy chiefs, ward chairpersons and members of rural municipalities, municipalities and sub-metropolitan cities is coming to an end. There is a legal provision for the government to fix the date on the recommendation of the Election Commission to hold the election on a suitable date.
