PANCHTHAR, Nov 11: The 137th birth anniversary of Phalgunanda Lingdel, a Mahaguru (great religious leader) admired and followed by the Kirat community, is being observed in various districts of Province 1.
The government declared Lingdel as a national luminary in 2009 and has announced a public holiday in the entire Panchthar district and a few local units in neighboring Ilam and Taplejung districts on his birth anniversary. Lingden is remembered for his role in bringing social reforms.
He was born on 25th Kartik, 1942 BS at what is called today Mangsebung Rural Municipality-2 in Ilam district to mother Hamshamati and father Jaganbaj Limbu. He died in 2005 BS.
The indigenous Kirat community in eastern Nepal observes his birth anniversary. Followers from both Nepal and India have flocked to Panchthar district to pay homage to the grave of Phalgunanda at Silati.
