KATHMANDU, Sept 6: The nightlong downpour on Sunday has left various roads inside the Kathmandu Valley waterlogged. The roadways around the Soltimode area, eastern areas of the Narayanhiti Palace and Annapurna Chowk have been submerged by last night’s rainfall. 

According to Milan Shakya, Chief Executive Officer of Kathmandu's Drinking Water Limited, the road has submerged due to smaller side drains which are constructed on the roadsides. “The side drainage system needs to be upgraded to avoid such incidents in the future,” he said. 

A single night of rainfall has left the roads inside the valley heavily inundated. Transport entrepreneurs and passengers are having a hard time as water levels have reached over one to two feets in some parts of the Kathmandu valley. Many houses and shops have also been inundated by last night’s rainfall. 

Likewise, vehicles could be seen half submerged in  various parts of the city including Sundhara, Baluwatar, Kumaripati and Tinkune. Also, corridors around the Bagmati, Bishnumati and Dhobikhola have been waterlogged due to the increase in water levels. 

The Kathmandu Valley has been suffering from such a situation every year due to lack of maintenance of drainage infrastructures. The drainage problem has also become visible in the newly-formed municipalities alongside the Kathmandu Valley. Many locals have also expressed their dissatisfaction towards various departments for not solving the problem which occurs on a yearly basis. 

The Melamchi Drinking Water Project is currently constructing a water treatment plant and drainage along the river as there are fears that problems caused by the lack of proper drainage systems are likely to occur in the future. The project is also constructing sewage treatment plants in Guheshwori, Suryabinayak, Balkumari and Sundarighat.
