KATHMANDU, September 3: CPN-UML Vice Chairman Bam Dev Gautam has renounced the membership of the party.

According to leaders close to him, Vice Chairman Gautam submitted his resignation letter to the UML Party Office Secretary Sher Bahadur Tamang at the UML's Headquarter in Thapathali on Friday evening.

Gautam was elected as Vice Chairman of the party during the Ninth General Convention of the UML. In the past few months, he had been organizing a campaign to keep the UML unity intact as Chairman K P Oli and senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal were at odds. Senior leader Nepal has already formed a new party called CPN (Unified Socialist) party.

Gautam had earlier formed a separate party after severing ties with the UML in 1998 and formed CPN (ML). The party was later merged into the CPN-UML. Gautam has again renounced the UML's membership again after 25 years.

Gautam had earlier announced to be part of the Nepal-led Unified Socialist party. Leaders close to him have already joined the Nepal-led party. His wife is a member of the House of Representatives.
