KATHMANDU, August 11: The chief minister (CM) of Lumbini Province, Shankar Pokharel resigned from his post on Wednesday.

Pokharel submitted his resignation to chief of the province, Amik Sherchan. Pokharel had summoned a parliamentary party meeting and cabinet meeting before resigning from his post.

Earlier, a no-confidence motion was registered against CM Pokharel at the provincial assembly on August 3 which was filed by the opposition alliance on April 19 and May 9.

The opposition alliance of Nepali Congress (NC), CPN (Maoist Center), Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) and Rastriya Janamorcha Party has been attempting to oust Pokharel from power.

A no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Shankar Pokharel was scheduled to be discussed by the provincial assembly this afternoon.

Following Pokharel’s resignation, Kul Prasad KC, the parliamentary party leader of the Maoist Center, is projected to be the next chief minister of Lumbini Province. Province Chief Sherchan is likely to call upon the opposition alliance to form a new government.

Of the 87 members in the provincial assembly, there are currently 80 members. Of them, 38 are from CPN-UML, 19 from the NC, 18 from the Maoist Center, excluding the speaker, three from the JSP and one from the Rastriya Janamorcha Party.
