GORKHA, August 4: Floods and landslides in the country have created havoc in the rural areas of Nepal this year. The disasters have affected farms, infrastructures and day to day lives of many people across the country.

Similarly, a landslide in Gorkha has destroyed a suspension bridge connecting the Chumnumbri Rural Municipality 6 and 7. The bridge was destroyed by a landslide Tuesday night.

According to Saroj Lama, a local resident, problems have started to emerge in traveling between Chumchet and Chekampar following the loss of the bridge. Mules carrying food items and basic necessities had to stop their deliveries due to the incident. The bridge was constructed by an organization 10 years ago.

People have started to look for alternative routes through the cliffs after the bridge was swept away. However, the alternative route is not to be used while carrying heavy loads, Lama said. “People of 15-18 settlements used to travel through the bridge,” he said “The incident has led to problems in traveling to the district headquarters as well as in transporting food items,” Lama added.

Similarly, mule businessmen have been left in a dilemma due to the problem at hand. People have started preparations to dig a new road. The Chumnubri Rural Municipality has already received information regarding the incident from the local government and has announced plans to make an alternative arrangement for the problem.

“The municipality will help to open a roadway for the time being as the bridge cannot be rebuilt in a few days. We will take initiatives for that,” chief of the municipality, Dhanbahadur Gurung informed Republica.
