KATHMANDU, July 24: The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has postponed its ward-level convention due to serious disputes seen in the distribution of the party’s active membership.

A meeting of the NC’s current and former office-bearers held in the capital on Saturday made the decision to postpone the ward-level general convention of the party scheduled for Tuesday (July 27).

According to NC Spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma, a probe committee formed under the chairmanship of Ramesh Lekhak to investigate into the anomalies, if any, in the distribution of the party’s active membership will submit its report to the party on Monday. The next meeting of the party will announce a fresh date for the ward-level general convention.

Earlier, NC had announced its plan to finalize the party’s active membership by July 14. However, this could not be accomplished due to serious disputes seen in the distribution of the party’s active membership in different districts.

The decision to postpone the party’s ward level convention is likely to affect the party's 14th general convention scheduled for September 1-4 in Kathmandu. The party planned to hold the ward-level convention on July 26, municipal level convention on July 31, and regional convention on August 4.

Similarly, the party announced a scheduled election-constituency (House of Representatives) level convention for August 2 in districts with only one constituency and August 10 in districts with more than one constituency. The province-level convention was likewise scheduled for August 17-18.

NC leaders said the change in the schedule of the ward-level convention could cause NC to defer the general convention itself. However, NC Spokesperson Sharma maintained that the date of the general convention will remain the same even as the date of local level convention could see some changes.
