KATHMANDU, July 18: The newly-formed government led by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has tabled the ordinance-based budget presented by the KP Oli-led government at parliament.

Citing the need for endorsement of the budget by parliament, the Deuba-led government on Sunday tabled the budget prepared by the previous government at parliament. According to the law, a budget presented via an ordinance should receive parliament’s approval within 60 days of the inception of the parliamentary session.

According to an official at the Ministry of Finance, the government has sought to amend some provisions in the budget before endorsing it from parliament.   

The Oli-led government has been criticized for presenting a full-fledged budget through an ordinance. Former Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel had presented the budget for the next fiscal year on May 29 after the then Prime Minister Oli dissolved parliament, which the Supreme Court reinstated through a mandamus.

Poudel presented a budget amounting Rs 1.647 trillion for 2021/22. The budget has been criticized for being election-oriented, populous and full of extravagant spending plans for the so-called development projects, mainly those of the electoral constituencies of influential leaders of the CPN-UML.
