POKHARA, Dec 19: A flashflood triggered by an avalanche has caused severe damages in Ghami of Mustang district on Sunday.

Mustang's Chief District Officer Bhimraj Pokharel informed that the flood in Dhakamar River swept away eight wooden bridges.

"A flashflood has caused several physical damages in the village," he said, adding, "But no any human losses have been reported so far."

The village has a total of two-dozen houses. "The avalanche took the form of flood at 9 am on Sunday," he said. "The villagers had shifted to lower lands to avoid the harsh winter and it may be the main reason behind no human casualties."

CDO Pokharel said that it was a massive flood from a high part of the district. It also caused serious damages to the drinking water supply pipe of the village. He further said that people are facing difficulties to travel as the flood swept away bridges and drinking water pipes.

According to geologist Shree Kamal Duwedi, glacier lake outburst could have triggered the avalanche.

"There are two glacier lakes at the uphill side of the village. Those lakes are the sources of water of the Dhakamar River," he said. "Cold season is not favorable for glacier lake outburst but the avalanche could have been caused by the outburst."
