SINDHULI, May 3: An octogenarian has died of COVID-19, marking the first death in the district after the country was hit by the second wave of the pandemic. The 80-year-old woman of Tinpatan Rural Municipality-2 who was staying in home isolation following the infection died on Friday morning, confirmed Chairman of Sindhuli Hospital Pralhad Pokhrel. 

Currently, there are 95 active cases of COVID-19 in the district. While Kamalamai Municipality has recorded 47 cases, the number of COVID-19 cases in Dudhauli Municipality, Sunkoshi Rural Municipality stand at 29 and 13, respectively. Similarly, three cases have been reported in Tinpatan Rural Municipality, two in Marin Rural Municipality and one in Phikkal Rural Municipality. 

Meanwhile, two local level governments in the district have implemented a lockdown order to contain further spread of the COVID-19. The Dudhauli Municipality  has announced the lockdown till May 12, beginning from today while Golanjar Rural Municipality  went into lockdown on Sunday and it shall remain in place till May 9. Both local levels have closed all services except the most essential ones.  

Likewise, the distribution of national identity cards has been temporarily suspended following the detection of COVID-19 in the district.  A meeting held Sunday under the chair of District Disaster Management Committee chairperson and Chief District Officer Suresh Neupane decided to postpone the ongoing national identity cards distribution campaign for the time being. 

The meeting  has decided to urge all local levels to speed up contact tracing, further systematize oxygen plants in Covid hospitals and bring the Apollo Hospital’s isolation ward into operation, according to CDO Neupane.
