KATHMANDU, April 25: Minister for Foreign Affairs (MoFA),  Pradeep Gyawali has said that the government does not have any plan to enforce a nationwide lockdown immediately, despite the rising risk of the second wave of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Speaking to media persons after the ruling CPN-UML’s General Convention Organizing Committee’s meeting on Sunday afternoon, Minister Gyawali stated that the government would not go for a nationwide lockdown as it was not the ultimate solution to curb the spread of COVID-19.

“Though it breaks the chain of infection, it is not a sustainable solution,” he said, adding that local governments can enforce prohibitory orders in the smaller areas where the infection rate is high.

Enforcing a lockdown across the country at a time when the national economy is trying to revive after the first wave of the disease would not be a good decision, according to him.

“We’d rather work on raising awareness among the general public on the strict implementation of the health protocol set by the government,” Gyawali added.
