Finance minister instructs commission to expedite distribution of land to squatters

KATHMANDU, Feb 2: Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel has directed the Land Squatters’ Problem Resolution Commission to expedite the distribution of land ownership certificates to landless dalits and squatters.

Speaking at a program organized at the Ministry of Finance, Minister Podudel said that the provision of providing land ownership certificates to the landless is a high priority of the government. He directed the commission to provide the certificates to those who meet the criteria. He asked the stakeholders to collect accurate data on who the real landless are and the costs for the procedure.

“We will not allow a shortage of resources and manpower,” said Finance Minister Poudel. “I request you to carry out the task accordingly.”

Chairperson of the commission, Devi Prasad Gyawali said that his team has been working in coordination with the local units of government, adding that the working hour will be extended to 18 hours a day to get results. The officials of the commission also presented the progress made so far and its future goals.

According to the commission, an agreement has been reached with 401 local units of 74 districts for the management of landless dalits, squatters and  for their systematic settlement while data collection is underway in 14 local units.

By mid-March 2021, data collection of 100 local units will be completed in consultation with 753 local units and details of at least 500,000 families will be collected. Similarly, land ownership certificates will be distributed to at least 50,000 people by completing the survey in 100 local units by mid-July 2021.
