KATHMANDU, Jan 30: The government has confirmed that bird flu (H5N8) has been detected in Kathmandu on Saturday.

Issuing a press statement, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development said that bird flu has been detected at a farm in Tarkeshwor Municipality-7 in Kathmandu district.

The H5N8 virus has been reported in several states of India for the last few days. As the virus was detected in the southern neighbor, the government has been testing samples from farms to check the state of the virus in Nepal.

The government has already banned the import of chicken from India after bird flu cases were detected in the southern neighbor.

According to the ministry, at least 1,865 ducks, 622 quails, 32 chickens, 25 turkeys, 542 eggs and 75 kg chicken fodder were destroyed after the virus was detected in the farm.
