KATHMANDU, Jan 17: The National Examination Board (NEB) is preparing to publish the results of Grade 12 by January 23. Chairman of the board, Chandra Mani Poudel said that the work of publishing the results has reached the final stage. He mentioned that the delay has been caused due to the negligence by the schools.

Speaking at an interaction organized by Education Journalists’ Network (EJON), Poudel said that even though the board had decided to publish the results in the last week of December, it took time to enter the data as the schools did not send the answer sheets in order. “Due to the risk of COVID-19, the responsibility of conducting the examination this year was given to the schools,” he said, “But the results obtained from the schools were not in order and there was a problem in data entry and verification.” He added that the board is working on verification. “If the work continues at the same pace, the results will be made public by January 23.”

The government conducted Grade 12 examinations in November last year with the physical presence of students despite the high risk of coronavirus infection. The NEB conducted the examinations by passing the Secondary Education Passing Examination (Class 12) Procedure 2020 regarding the student assessment, examination operation, management, archiving and certification keeping in view the risk of the coronavirus infection, said NEB Chairman Poudel.

Due to the risk, the board decided to give 40 percent marks in the written test of Grade 12, and the remaining 40 percent to be covered from the cumulative marks obtained in Grade 11, and 20 percent from internal evaluation. The written examination of Secondary Education Examination (SEE) students was postponed and the students were marked through internal assessment.

A total of 4,105 exam centers were designated for 433,180 examinees this year.

Poudel also said that the failure of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to finalize the SEE exams on time has added to the challenges in exam management.

He said that although the school was given the responsibility of conducting SEE exams due to the risk of COVID-19, the Education Act states that the board has to conduct examination, which has added challenges to the operation and management.

“The board has sent a proposal to the ministry to conduct the SEE examination in May,” Poudel said. “Even two months after the proposal was sent, no decision has been taken.”

He informed that the printing of question papers used to take place during December but it is still unknown as to who will conduct the examination.
