KATHMANDU, Dec 3: Police have arrested an individual on the charge of trafficking a man to South Africa.

A team of police from the Anti Human Trafficking Bureau arrested Ganesh Kumar Lowa, 43, a resident of Taplejung district,  from Maharajgunj in Kathmandu on the charge of trafficking a 32-year-old man to South Africa.

The trafficker took the man to South Africa, luring him with a lucrative job. The traffickers first took the man to India from Tribhuvan International Airport, then to Dubai and Qatar before finally taking him to South Africa.

The man was held hostage for five months. “During the time, he was tortured mentally and physically, and exploited financially,” according to a senior official at the bureau.

The man somehow managed to escape and reach the Nepal Embassy in South Africa. After help from the embassy, the man was able to come to Nepal. Following his complaint, police were able to nab the trafficker.

The Kathmandu District Court has already remanded Lowa to judicial custody allowing more time for police to investigate the case. A case is being filed against the arrested person under Human Trafficking and Smuggling Act, police said.
