Dr KC breaks his 19th hunger strike

KATHMANDU, Oct 11: Senior Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Govinda KC ended his 19th fast-unto-death  on Sunday morning.

Dr KC was on hunger strike demanding medical reforms in Nepal for the past 28 days.

The government and Dr Govinda KC reached an eight-point agreement on Saturday midnight. Following the agreement, Dr KC has ended the strike at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.

Dr KC has been staging hunger strike time and again demanding reforms in the medical sector of Nepal. Youths, political leaders, medical unions, professionals had expressed solidarity with Dr KC.

According to the agreement, the government has decided to start MBBS classes at Karnali Academy of Health Sciences by the next year. Likewise, the government has also agreed to develop infrastructure for initiation of MBBS classes in Geta, Bardibas and Pokhara Institute of Health Sciences in Sudurpaschim Province by 2023 (2080 BS).

Similarly, the government will take initiatives for the establishment of medical colleges in Doti, Dadeldhura, Udaypur and Illam or Panchthar along with the allocation of budget for free health services at Bayalpata Hospital.

Also, both Dr KC and the government have agreed to make the appointments at universities and other medical institutions transparent and fair.
