KATHMANDU, Oct 7: The government has formed a three-member committee to hold talks with senior orthopedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC, who has been staging hunger strike, demanding reforms in the medical sector of the country.

According to an aide to Dr KC, the committee is led by secretary at the Minister for Education, Science and Technology. “The committee led by Gopinath Mainali also has Dr Gunaraj Mainali, joint-secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population, and Dr Dilip Sharma, director at Medication Education Commission,” Pukar Bam, told Republica.

Dr KC has been staging hunger strike for the past 24 days to exert pressure on the government to implement the agreement reached in the past. There have been calls from various quarters to address his demand and save Dr KC's life as the government failed to show any proactive initiative to end his fast-onto-death strike.

Dr KC's supporters have also formed a four-member talk team led by Jiban Chhetri to hold talks with the government. The panel has Dr Anjani Kumar Jha, Dr Lochan Karki and Om Prakash Aryal as members.

Amid worsening health condition of Dr KC and the government's lack of seriousness to hold talks with agitating Dr KC, editors of mainstream print and online media outlets have appealed the government to hold talks with Dr KC without any further delay and save his life.
