1 million tons of garbage produced in a year in Nepal

KATHMANDU, Sept 19: As much as a million tons of garbage comes out of residences and businesses annually in the country, according to the statistics released by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) on Sunday. 

Among those, 386,690 tons of waste is emitted from residential areas while 245,884 tons from businesses. Furthermore, 103,244 tons of garbage is released from educational institutions and 94,392 tons from industrial areas.

Likewise, the health sector contributes to the generation of 101,507 tons while 66,220 tons of garbage comes out from other areas, the CBS revealed.

A total of 389,983 tons of emitted garbage is sent to landfill sites, 315,069 tons dumped on riverbanks while 22,075 tons of garbage is burnt down. 

CBS Director Sushil Kumar Sharma shared that plastic, metal and paper waste amounting to 8,690 tons can be recycled. Record keeping of the waste at the local, provincial and federal levels was not upto the international standards, according to the CBS report. 

The report suggests capacity enhancement of the professionals and stakeholders working in the waste management sector to make statistics on the classification, production and use and reuse in accordance with international standards. 

The CBS had conducted a survey on waste production, collection and management in 2076 BS.
